On May 2nd, Tim Cernak, assistant professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Chemistry at the University of Michigan, sat down with April Baer from Stateside to discuss the role pharmacists can play in decreasing the rate of plant and animal extinctions. While most people attribute extinction events to habitat loss, Tim points out that there are multiple drivers, including rises in the prevalence of wildlife diseases and invasive species. During the episode, the role of conservation medicine is explored, from helping sea turtles with cancer and reducing the spread of avian flu to mitigating the destruction of vulnerable trees by invasive species. Tim’s interview begins at around the 12:30 mark of the episode.
